NIPBA Championship
Results - Double Success for Barry Kane!
Barry Kane was the toast of the NIPBA
on Saturday when he secured a Fours and Junior Singles double at the
Champioship finals at Ballymoney. It was a busy day for the young
Dunluce player as he contested three finals. Ably assisted by team mates
Simon Colvin, brother Rodney and Mervyn McKeeman, Barry secured the
fours title with victory over the gritty Portglenone rink, skipped by
Chris Jones. It took a superb drawing shot by McKeeman on the
second last end with seven shots against to secure second shot and leave
his rink with a six shot cushion going into the last end.
Barry then faced experienced
international Ian McClure in the Open Singles final. However, the
Portrush man was in inspired form and secured a 21 - 17 victory.
The previous day Ian won a titanic battle against Brookgreen's Ian Ross
in the semi - final 21 - 20, a measure on the last end deciding the tie.
Barry, however, showed great spirit
and character in the Junior Singles final against Cookstown player, Mark
Wilson. Obviously deflated somewhat from his Open Singles defeat,
Barry struggled early on and trailed 7 - 4. However, he finally
settled and played the better bowls to secure the title with a 21 - 12
scoreline.
In the other disciplines, Mark Mason
won the Youth Singles. In arguably the best final of the day, the
young Coleraine player defeated Ballymoney's Aaron Tennant 21 - 19.
Both players displayed great talent and showed maturity beyond their
years and surely can look forward to a bright future in the game.
Ballymoney contested the Pairs Final with Brian Hughes and Gary Kelly
defeating clubmates Allister Steele and Willie McCaw while Brookgreen's
Ian Ross led Joe Moore and Brian Lindsay to victory in the Triples
against Dunluce's Uel McKeeman.
Congratulations to all the winners as
they now look forward to the Irish Finals at Belmont in September.
